Kitesurfing in Essaouira

Kitesurfing in Essaouira refers to the practice of the water sport kitesurfing along the Atlantic coast in and around the city of Essaouira, Morocco. The city has become one of the most popular destinations in North Africa for kitesurfing due to its consistent trade winds, long sandy beaches, and vibrant surf culture.

Geography and conditions

Essaouira is located on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, about 175 km west of Marrakech. The region benefits from steady alizé (trade winds) that blow nearly year-round, especially between April and October. The wide bay of Essaouira provides relatively safe conditions for beginners, while the waves outside the bay and at nearby spots such as Sidi Kaouki attract more advanced riders.

Water temperatures range from 17–22 °C, and wetsuits are typically used most of the year. The strong winds in summer months make Essaouira a popular choice for both kitesurfing and windsurfing.

History

Surfing and windsurfing were introduced to Essaouira in the 1980s by European travelers. Kitesurfing began to grow in popularity in the late 1990s and early 2000s, coinciding with the global expansion of the sport. By the 2010s, Essaouira was widely recognized as a kitesurfing hub in Morocco, alongside Dakhla.

Tourism

Kitesurfing is an important part of Essaouira’s tourism economy. Visitors from Europe and beyond travel to the city for both short holidays and dedicated kitesurfing camps. The sport complements Essaouira’s other attractions, such as its UNESCO-listed medina, seafood cuisine, and annual Gnaoua World Music Festival.

Schools and camps

A number of local and international schools operate in Essaouira, offering lessons, equipment rental, and surf camps.

  • Essaouira Dreamkite is among the schools offering structured packages that include lessons, accommodation, and guided experiences. The camp is known for catering to both beginners and advanced riders, and emphasizes safety and personalized coaching.

Events

While Essaouira does not currently host large-scale international competitions, the bay is regularly used for national events and freestyle exhibitions.
